Harris Hawk Pencil Studies

I’m off and running on my SCBWI Mentor Program assignments.  I’m so excited and fortunate to be working with Deborah Nourse Lattimore. At our Tahoe Retreat one-on-one, me and Deborah set up some assignments for the next six months.  Get to know three animals really well with a pencil.  Here is the first.

It just so happens that the Illustration Friday Prompt is “sight”.

  1. Fantastic start! There’s a lot of pent up hawk-energy in the sketches. For some reason I especially love the tiny claw shadows you rendered on the branches. They really define the dimensionality of the foot as it lifts.

  2. Absolutely perfect pencil pieces, Donna. Truly exquisite. I have begun thinking the hawk may well be my totem. I see them everywhere, almost daily, and can pick them out from further distances than would be expected.
